Fiberglass vs. Steel Entry Doors for Canadian Winters

Compare fiberglass and steel entry doors for Toronto winters: insulation, glass, maintenance, installation and the questions to ask before buying.

Which material is warmer in Toronto?

Neither the word fiberglass nor the word steel tells you how an entire entrance will perform. Insulated systems in both materials can be considered for a Canadian home. The useful comparison is between the exact door assemblies you are being quoted, including their glass, frame and seals.

Natural Resources Canada distinguishes whole-product ratings from centre-of-glass ratings. A lower U-factor indicates less heat transfer; a higher Energy Rating (ER), where applicable, indicates better overall energy performance. Ask for the rating of the proposed configuration rather than accepting a generic insulation claim.

  • Request model-specific performance information.
  • Confirm whether the quoted configuration is ENERGY STAR certified; do not assume every design is.
  • Compare like-for-like glass and opening sizes.

Glass, sidelites and the source of drafts

A large glass insert or a pair of sidelites changes both the look and the specification of an entry system. Decorative, clear and privacy glass should be compared for their exact construction and whole-assembly performance, not just their appearance.

A draft can also come from worn weatherstripping, an uneven threshold, an out-of-square frame or gaps around the installation. Replacing only the slab may leave those problems unresolved. During a consultation, identify where air or water is entering before deciding how much of the entrance to replace.

Fiberglass: finish and design considerations

Fiberglass is worth discussing when you want a painted contemporary appearance or a woodgrain-style finish without specifying a solid-wood slab. Available textures, colours and glazing depend on the chosen model.

Do not treat fiberglass as maintenance-free. Cleaning products, exposure, finish care and refinishing requirements vary by supplier. Ask how the finish should be maintained, especially on an entrance exposed to afternoon sun or wind-driven precipitation.

Steel: finish and design considerations

Steel is worth comparing when you want a painted entrance and a design that fits your current budget. Its surface material alone is not a guarantee of security or energy efficiency: the frame, hardware and assembly still matter.

Inspect coating damage and ask how scratches or dents should be addressed. Follow the selected supplier’s instructions rather than applying a generic repair product. Compare the finish warranty separately from the written terms covering the door and installation.

Installation matters as much as the specification

Natural Resources Canada warns that poor installation can cause drafts, condensation and water leakage. A properly selected product still needs a sound opening, appropriate air and water sealing, a correctly adjusted threshold and hardware that closes the door against its seals.

For a Toronto or GTA replacement, ask what happens if concealed damage is found after removal. Clarify whether your quote includes the frame, trim, disposal and any necessary repairs. The answers make two apparently similar prices much easier to compare.

Make the decision around your home

Bring photos of the entrance, the approximate opening dimensions and the problems you want to solve. Oscar can review material, glass, hardware and replacement scope during an in-home visit, or discuss design options at the North York office.

Use the estimator for a preliminary range, then compare a measured written quote. Your final decision should balance appearance, product-specific performance, maintenance and the complete installed price—not a claim that one material wins in every home.

Frequently asked questions

Is fiberglass always better than steel for Canadian winters?

No. Compare the exact insulated door systems and their whole-product performance information. Glass, frame, seals and installation can change the result.

Does more glass automatically mean a cold entrance?

Not automatically. Ask about the proposed glazing and the complete assembly’s rating. Also check installation and weatherstripping rather than judging performance from glass area alone.

Can I keep my existing frame?

That depends on its condition, dimensions and compatibility with the replacement system. A measured inspection is needed before deciding between a slab-only change and a complete replacement.

Which material costs less?

Compare the current pricing guide for the same configuration, glass and hardware. A preliminary material range is not the final price of your opening.

Are all Door Depot doors ENERGY STAR certified?

Certification must be confirmed for the exact model and configuration you select. This guide does not claim certification for every Door Depot design.
